The old woman held Eliza at arm’s length, “How dreadful that the weather didn’t hold for your trip. Are you alright my dear?”

Eliza nodded but didn’t say anything. Sam could see the emotions racing across her features. He glanced over and saw the confusion on Jackson’s face. He watched the man head to the porch next.

“Jackson?”

Sam watched him climb the stairs to the woman and receive a hug from his mother. He noted that Eliza was frowning. She turned and pushed into the house Oh boy!

He stepped up to the porch and Jackson moved back and introduced Sam.

The woman was surprised but smiled. “It is nice to finally meet you, Sam. You don’t mind if I call you by your Christian name, do you? Between George and Elizabeth I feel as if I have known you my entire life. I was sorry to hear that George passed away. Did you return before then?”

Sam shook his head with a frown. “No, My Lady, I only just returned to Woodhill. But Eliza told me about you and I would be honored to have you call me Sam. Eliza and Serena spoke of nothing but you last evening after I told them we were coming for a visit.”

He stepped up to her and was only mildly surprised when the woman took his arm. “Call me Nanny, please.”

Sam entered the cottage with Nanny and found Eliza at the window. He could tell she had figured out who Jackson was and wasn’t happy about the introduction in the carriage.

The older woman released his arm and moved to Eliza. “Your little imp already ran for the books, didn’t she? That girl, I swear she reads more than any other person I know.” She turned to face him. “Tell me, Sam, has Serena regaled you with her knowledge from reading the many books in the Pensworth Library?”

He shook his head. “She hasn’t had a chance yet, though I noticed her penchant for reading. It is a good hobby for her to have and she is welcome to read whatever she likes. Heaven forbid my sister bow to the rules of society and their claim that girls shouldn’t be educated.”

He noticed the surprise in Eliza’s eyes when he talked so adamantly about women’s education. They smiled at each other than Nanny picked up the conversation asking Jackson about how he had come to be with them.

Not much time passed before Jackson asked Eliza to go for a walk while his mother stayed with Miss Martin and Serena. Sam walked with them for a time then parted ways at Mr. Barton’s home office. He knocked and was led to the man’s office and introduced himself.

“It is nice to finally meet you, Your Grace. I am glad you came to see me so quickly. Please, have a seat.”

Sam sat in one of the club chairs. “I just received my Grandfather’s letter that mentioned you. He said you have information about Eliza.”

The Barrister got right to the point and explained all he had found to Sam.
